This
is not Your Everyday Slave Story!! |
“From
the mouths of babes…every parent should listen to the silent tears
and care when the fire of innocence no longer flickers in a child’s
eyes. Wanda Johnson-Hall tells a rich tale of tragedy and triumph in short
stories and vignettes that should make us all examine how we treat others—especially
our future, children.”

Celia’s
Land is the remarkable story of Celia Mudd, the great aunt ot Kentucky’s
first African American Senator, Georgia Davis Powers. Celia Mudd was born
in Nelson County, Kentucky in 1859. Upon receiving her freedom, she chose
to remain with The Lancaster family, who had once owned her. Controversy
brewed when Sam Lancaster died and left Celia the family’s 840 acre
farm. Sam’s brother, Robert, contested the will although he has sold
his portion of the farm to Sam. A hotbed of political frenzy existed at
the time with the threat of the Civil War coming to Kentucky. John “The
Boy Governer” Beckham, had become Kentucky’s youngest governor
after the blatant assassination of Governor William “Boss Bill”
Goebel three years earlier. The threat of prohibition was looming with Bardstown
being the state’s distillery
center making the climate even hotter in this town. And now this “uppity
Negro woman” was staking claim to one of the county’s prime
pieces of land. This book is a must read for all history buffs, professors, students, and women who want to be inspired and empowered. Set in a time of true change and reform, Celia’s Land is a book about triumph and dignity, love and appreciation. |
